Every year starting in May and continuing for about a week, our students celebrate their annual festival called “Bachanalia”. The opening day is very significant as students formally receive a key to the city from the president of Zielona Gora. This means that for three consecutive days the city “belongs” to University’s students.
First day of the celebration is also famous for its parade, when dress- up students get crazy with their costumes of characters form e.g. ancient Rome, jungle, or Disney! In these days the programme of the celebration is fulfilled with various cultural activities, mainly entertainment and sport events, but also commonly known ‘chill-out’ in the form of a barbecue, where thousands of students gather together and enjoy their free time. In the evening there are open air concerts of well-known Polish artists.
The festival is promoted as a scientific picnic in the main walk-through of Zielona Gora. The academic staff and students of majority of faculties present interesting projects, which have been developed throughout the year at the university’s laboratories or classrooms. The main purpose of this Festival is to present the practical aspects of scientific and technical projects’ outcomes which can be applied on everyday basis.
A festival celebrating the French language and culture, usually organized in March. The programme of this festival includes evenings spend in a nice atmosphere accompanied by French songs, theme exhibition, cuisine and competitions of various kinds.
Usually held in November, it is an excellent Musical Event organized by University’s Institute of Music, which not only organizes the “Green Town of Jazz” but many other events and musical workshops throughout the whole year. Special guests and famous musicians accompany our local University’s band in the evening concerts.
Winemaking festival “Winobranie”
The biggest winemaking festival in Poland takes place in Zielona Gora. It’s most important event in the city and takes place in September every year. The city is full of fun, music and local wine. Apart from wonderful concerts there are: open-air games, sports competitions, a flea market and for the most, a colourful parade led by Bacchus (Dionysus). The very first winemakers marched through the city in order to celebrate a rich harvest together with local residents in 1852 year.
